Making/editing a category

Categories group challenges and control how they appear on the map and in lists. Set name, icon, background color, and text color.

How to create or edit

  1. In the world control panel, open the Categories tab.
  2. Create a new category or select one to edit.
  3. Set:
    • Name - Label for the category (e.g. "Web", "Crypto").
    • Icon - Icon used on the map and in lists.
    • Background color - Fill color for the category.
    • Text color - Color for text on the category.

Challenges are assigned to a category in the challenge editor. The map and challenge list show challenges using their category's color and icon, which helps participants navigate by topic or difficulty.

The Categories tab also supports CSV import/export and deletion actions for larger category sets. Use those bulk actions carefully, especially after challenges have already been assigned.

Field guidance

  • Name should be short, readable, and useful to players. Examples: Web, Crypto, Forensics, OSINT, Reverse Engineering, Warm-up.
  • Icon should reinforce the topic or difficulty without needing extra explanation.
  • Background color should make map markers and category chips easy to distinguish.
  • Text color should contrast clearly with the background color.

Categories are presentation and organisation tools. They do not set scoring, prerequisites, solve rules, or challenge answers.

Editing safely

  • Renaming a category changes how assigned challenges are labelled.
  • Colour changes affect all challenges assigned to that category.
  • Choose text and background colors with enough contrast for readability.
  • If a category is used heavily, check the map after editing to make sure markers still stand out.
  • Before deleting categories, check whether challenges still reference them.
  • After CSV import, spot-check several challenges to make sure category names, icons, and colors imported as intended.
